The AppImage project is considering to apply to participate as a mentoring organization in **Google Summer of Code 2017**.

Toward this end, we maintain a Google Summer of Code 2017 ideas page at [https://github.com/probonopd/AppImageKit/wiki/GSoC-2017-Ideas](https://github.com/probonopd/AppImageKit/wiki/GSoC-2017-Ideas).

Feel free to discuss project ideas or other related concerns here - whether you are a student or otherwise.

The following program description is taken from the [GSoC 2017 Flyer](https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/resources/downloads/GSoC2017Flyer.pdf).

Over the past 12 years, GSoC has enabled over 12,000 students from over 100 countries to work with 567 open source projects and produce millions of lines of code. The goals of the program are to:

- Inspire students to begin participating in open source development.
- Provide students in Computer Science and related fields the opportunity to do work related to their academic pursuits.
- Give students exposure to real-world software development scenarios (e.g., testing, version control, software licensing, mailing-list etiquette, etc.).
- Create more open source code.
- Help open source projects bring in new developers.

Successful student participants are given a stipend, enabling them to focus on their programming projects for three months. Volunteer mentors answer questions and provide guidance to best practices and existing community norms.

Students report that participation is a great learning experience, a lot of fun, and something that potential employers love to see on their resume!

In 2016, 1202 students were accepted into the program and worked with 178 open source projects. For full details on requirements for participation, program rules, and general information visit [https://g.co/gsoc](https://g.co/gsoc)

Dear Sir,

I am Rishabh Jain and I am a pre-final year undergraduate of Department of Computer Science & Information Systems, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India. This is my first experience with GSoC. I thought of working with this organization.
Since there is plenty of time before applying, I thought of getting familiar with the projects. But, I’m unable to find the list for the same. Please help me with this. I’m willing to dedicate more than 15h/week to learn and contribute.

Reply soon.

Dear Rishabh, thanks for your interest in AppImage. In fact you already have found the “mailing list” - this Discourse forum is it. The actual code is on [https://github.com/probonopd/AppImageKit](https://github.com/probonopd/AppImageKit) and [https://github.com/probonopd/AppImages](https://github.com/probonopd/AppImages).

Now would be a good time to familiarize yourself with the project, check out the code, get it to compile, and have a look at the open issues. Maybe you’d like to chime in on the existing issues on GitHub, or even send a Pull Request or two?
